Old Headlines - April 1-15, 2002

Obviously an undertaking such as KryptonSite takes up a lot of bandwidth, and that costs money. Beyond that, though, your webmaster Craig is still barely employed. How can you help? Ordering through any of the Amazon.com links always helps, but you can also donate to the site via PayPal! The links to do so are just below. Thanks!! Any help is appreciated. (And if anyone out there is interested in a web content/creative/television-obsessed type guy, please let me know!)

Smallville Executive Producers Spin A Web For Spider-Man 2

(4/5) The first Spider-Man film is not due out until May 3, but plans are already underway for a sequel to the movie.

Some exciting news, however, was released in the Hollywood Reporter today.

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, executive producers and writers for Smallville, have been signed on to write the Spider-Man movie sequel. "They are excellent writers," Columbia Pictures Executive VP of Production Matt Tolmach said. "We honestly have been trying to get them to work here for a long time. We love not only the movies they've written, but also their show Smallville. They felt like they were of this world. It was incredibly serendipitous. We now feel like we have absolutely the right team and the right movie in place to head into the sequel."

Allison Mack Cult Times Magazine Now Available In The U.S.!

(4/7) Issue #79 of the UK's Cult Times magazine with Tom Welling and Allison Mack on the cover is now available on newsstands.

The issue features an interview with Allison Mack, who plays the incredibly popular "Chloe Sullivan" character. It reveals that the character was originally written to be African-American, and offers some of Allison's thoughts on the character (but no hints on famous relatives). "I'm very similar to my character," Allison told Cult Times. "Of course, she's a character and she's a bit younger than I am, so she has immaturity in her. However, we're both very excitable, we both have a ton of energy, we're both enthusiastic, and we're both nosey..."

Allison also hints that her character has a tie to someone in Metropolis other than Lex Luthor. Hmm, we thought Al Gough said "I didn't want the actress to say anything, so I'm not about to!" and here Allison spills the beans yet again ;-) She also mentions wanting to see more of Chloe's mother, which is interesting because, well, we haven't met Chloe's mother yet.

"Reaper" Image!

Chloe and Pete check out KryptonSite(4/3) To your left you can find an image of Sam Jones III (Pete) and Allison Mack (Chloe) from the April 23 episode of Smallville, which is titled "Reaper."

"Reaper" features a young man who (as far as we can tell from descriptions we've heard) has the power to give and take life. It'll be the second of six new episodes in a row! But best of all it's great to see Chloe and Pete in some promotional material.

In the image to your left, Chloe and Pete are solving a case... or checking out KryptonSite... or who knows, maybe they too are trying to figure out that elusive LuthorCorp password.

"Reaper" Synopsis

(4/6) The WB has released a synopsis of the upcoming episode "Reaper," which airs on April 23rd:

"Clark (Tom Welling) must stop a kryptonite-infected man (guest star Reynaldo Rosales) who seeks to relieve the suffering of the elderly and sick by turning them into ashes - and Whitney's (Eric Johnson) ailing father may be his next victim. Meanwhile, Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) is furious after his father sends someone to look into LuthorCorp's financial records and this man reveals Lex's secret investigation into Clark and his family."

Reynaldo Rosales' previous credits include an episode of Charmed titled "Size Matters."

Entertainment Weekly Offers Advice For The Superman Franchise

(4/4) Even while Smallville soars on the WB airwaves, the Warner Bros. movie division is preparing a big-screen Superman movie to be directed by McG ("Charlie's Angels") and written by Alias's J.J. Abrams. Entertainment Weekly recently did a piece about what to do with the Superman franchise, and here's what they had to say about a Smallville relation to a new movie:

On the other end of the spectrum, ''Smallville'' takes the Superman mythos, and itself, almost TOO seriously at times. It's hard not to wish that Clark Kent (Tom Welling) would ease up on the teen angst; he's an adolescent with X-ray vision, so what more could he want? Nonetheless, the show's high-for-the-WB ratings, critical acclaim, and cultural cachet (witness the Rolling Stone cover) make it the most successful take on Superman since the first two Christopher Reeve movies.

How could the new Superman movie cash in that success? One simple step would be to cast Welling as the adult Man of Steel; he looks too old to be in high school, anyway. The show's Michael Rosenbaum may be too fresh-faced to play a grown-up Lex Luthor, but his nuanced portrayal makes him worthy of consideration, too. The cross-promotional opportunities afforded by such a casting stunt could be too rich for the filmmakers (and AOL Time Warner, the corporate force behind both the show and the movie -- as well as EW) to resist.

At the same time, McG is no doubt anxious to put his own stamp on Superman, which would extend to casting, and Warner might not mind having more than one viable Super-actor out there. Even so, the new movie could still be informed by ''Smallville'''s smart choices, such as placing Clark Kent squarely in the present (his ship landed in the '80s), paring down his superpowers, and showing us how lonely a gifted alien can be.

We here at KryptonSite (or at least webmaster Craig Byrne) feel that a new Superman movie at this time WITHOUT the show's cast and crew would be very hurtful to the Superman franchise. WB: Give Smallville its time to fly, a new Superman movie will be available to do once it's done. Or... once Smallville's run on TV is over, try a new Superman movie -- call it "Metropolis" -- and tell the tale of what happens once Smallville's Clark gets there. It'd be the reward to all of the fans who stuck with the show over the years.
