"Cool" Synopsis by Kat Picson (KMP) Crater Lake is frozen over, but there are meteor rocks in the depths below. A party is happening on its shore: people making out. Chloe and Clark show up. It's really cold, and Chloe says it's "20,000 degrees below zero." Chloe "thaws out" by the fire. Sean, a football player, asks Clark if Chloe is flying solo tonight. Clark tells him he's not her type. Sean approaches Chloe, sitting by a fire, and offers up a really lame pick-up line, and Chloe is surprised he knows her name. Chloe sat next to Sean's ex-girlfriend Jenna in a class. Whitney interrupts to invite Sean to play football by the lake. Sean asks for Chloe's number. Chloe writes her number on Sean's hand and he takes off. Clark sits down by Chloe and is surprised that Chloe gave her phone number to Sean. Chloe says, "Don't sound so shocked, Clark. Guys do find me attractive even if I don't have raven hair and the initials L.L." Clark says Sean is a "dawg" and Chloe assures him that she only gave him her phone number to make him go away. Chloe tells Clark to get Pete because they're leaving. Down by the lake, Whitney asks Sean what's going on between him and Chloe. Sean says with a knowing chuckle, "Another notch, dawg." Whitney says, "That's cold." Whitney is distracted by the pizza that just arrived and throws the football onto the frozen surface of the lake. Sean offers to get it as everyone goes to get pizza. He slides across the ice and it starts to crack. He falls in and is trapped by the ice that forms quickly on the surface again. He slowly drifts to the bottom, where there is a greenish glow. The next morning, the football is frozen to the lake's surface. Sean's hand breaks through the surface next to it [kinda like the movie "Carrie" -- freaky!]. He comes up looking gray. He puts his hands up to the fire, which instantly turns to ice as he sucks in its warmth, and he turns to a regular skin complexion agian. [roll opening credits "Somebody saaaaave me!" hee hee] The Kent house. Jonathan and Martha are calculating bills. Clark appears at the doorway wearing a really bright red shirt and comes up with the final figure in his head. Jonathan says he didn't want Clark to hear about that. Martha tells Clark that they'll probably have to take out another bank loan. Clark offers to become a big sports star and he'd be able to make a ton of money in endorsements. Martha quips that they'd settle for his getting to school on time. On the way to the bus stop, Clark asks Chloe if Sean had called. The answer was negative. Pete says something might have happened, because one time a guy didn't call his sister for a week, but it turned out his grandmother had died. Clark says she's better off, repeating his earlier "dawg" assessment of Sean. Pete says Sean was pretty cool to him [hardy har har, "cool!"]. Pete teases Clark about liking Lana, which Clark denies. So Pete suggests that Clark ask someone else out, like Chloe. Chloe interrupts, saying that she's not a crash test dummy for them to try out their dating skills. She tells Clark to ask out Lana, and tells Pete to stop acting like a Vegas bookie picks out his dates, and, "And both of you: Treat me better." They get on the bus. Sean is in the school nurse's office. The nurse says that it's the flu season. Sean says he can't get warm. She takes the thermometer out of his mouth and reads it. She says it can't be right because "you're not a Popsicle." She puts the thermometer back in his mouth, putting her hand to his forehead. Sean instantly heats up and says he's feeling better. As he walks out the nurse does a double-take at the thermometer. The Kent Farm. Martha is sawing some wood with a chainsaw. She turns around and nearly cuts Lex in half. Lex says he heard some of the farms were in trouble and he's offering his help "as an investor" to help modernize and expand. Lex tells Martha that he knows that Jonathan doesn't like him, and he would like her to hear his ideas. The Beanery. Lana is looking at a museum brochure. Lex comes up and says that it's a great exhibit, referring to the brochure. Lana says Whitney is taking her to Metropolis that weekend, and they would check it out. Lex says, "Trying to give the quarterback some culture?" and Lana says it was Whitney's idea. Lana says Lex is pretty quick to judge even though he wants people to keep an open mind. Whitney comes up and Lana mentions Metropolis. Whitney's face falls as he remembers that the guys pooled for a pay-per-view the next day, and he already gave them his share of the money. Whitney promised to take Lana the following week. Lex looks over from another table. Clark approaches the coffee house and sees Lana reading a book through the window. Lex meets him outside and tells him that she's free. Lex told Clark to ask her out to the Radiohead concert, and he would provide the tickets. Clark hesitates and mentions Whitney, whom Lex dismisses, saying, "A high school boyfriend is an obstacle." Lex throws in a limo ride, and Clark snatches the tickets and goes inside. Clark acts goofy and nervous and tells Lana that he's got tickets to Radiohead, and invites her. She hesitates, and Clark throws in, "just as friends." Lana accepts. At school: Clark tells Chloe and Pete about his "non-date" with Lana. Clark thanks Chloe for helping him. Chloe says, "Good, I'm glad," but her face has disappointment written all over it. Sean approaches Chloe and he invites her out. She has to finish up the Torch but tells him she could maybe do something after. But Sean sees his ex-girlfriend Jenna across the way and abandons Chloe in mid-sentence. Chloe doesn't understand why Sean stopped talking to her, even though she was playing "barely hard to get." Chloe goes inside the school building, and Clark watches Sean and Jenna go off together. Jenna's bathroom. She is in the shower, singing to the radio. She tells the shadow approaching that she has been waiting for him. Breath appears on the shower curtain. The shower curtains is pulled back and Jenna screams. He is completely blue and icicles appear at the corners of his mouth. Jenna says she's scared, and Sean says all he wants is to get warm. Sean kisses Jenna, and she turns blue as Sean's complexion returns to normal. He drops her, and there is a shattering noise as she hits the floor. The Kent House. Jonathan is fiddling with an engine part at the kitchen table. Martha says he can fiddle with all the motorcycle parts he wants if he would only go with her to Lex's. Jonathan says the Luthors don't know how to keep their word. Martha defends Lex and says he hasn't been anything but generous. Clark comes in completely happy and says he's going on a "date but not a date-date" with Lana. Clark says Lex hooked it up. Jonathan says, "Well it looks like Lex Luthor has worked out all of our evenings for us." Martha asks Clark if Lana is still going out with Whitney. Clark says, "She's not married, Ma" before going up the stairs. Sean is on the phone calling ex-girlfriends to see if they want dates. One named Bella rebuffs him, saying, "Save it for another girl." He sees Chloe's number written on his hand (555-0164, for those who are keeping score). The Kent House. Chloe tells Clark that his online horoscope says that he shouldn't flaunt his excitement, "which will be hard since I know you've been waiting for this date since like your first growth spurt." Clark reminds her it isn't a date and he thought Chloe was there to give him fashion advice. Chloe says one sign that Lana would think it's a date is if she's wearing something new. Clark goes to check the laundry basket and Chloe's phone rings. Chloe hangs up and joins Clark in the other room. She tells Clark that Sean just called. Clark says, "You really like him, don't you?" Chloe admits that he's "intellectually challenged" but that he was really hot. Chloe said he offered to bring her a coffee at the Torch. Clark said it sounded like a date. Chloe says it's not, but "a fact-finding mission to see if he deserves a date." Chloe rummages through the laundry basket, finds something and holds it up. "Blue's a good color on you." Luthor Mansion. Martha and Jonathan walk into a library or sitting room of some sort. Maybe it's his office. Martha inquires if they're early, referring to the lack of other people in the room. Lex admits the Kents are the only ones invited. Jonathan gets mad and says Lex is taking advantage of his family's problems. Lex says he wants to help. Jonathan concedes and says he'll listen. Luthor's limousine. Lana and Clark are inside. Clark says, "It beats another night of defensive reading." Lana looks surprised that Clark knew that. Clark says she's done it since they were kids, and said he does the same thing with astronomy. He looks at the stars and wonders if it would be better in another world. Lana says Clark always seems to understand what she's trying to say. Clark says it's magic. Lana is skeptical, so Clark takes out a deck of cards. He tells her to pick one. She does and holds it to her chest. Clark X-rays it and says, "Three of hearts." Lana says, "Full of surprises." They brush hands as Lana hands him back the card and they get uncomfortable. They talk about how they had to explain to people that it was not a date. Clark asks about Whitney, and Lana says she didn't tell him, and that since he was hanging out with his friends, she was hanging out with hers. Lana turns on the TV to break the tension and it's a news report. The anchor says that there is a manhunt for Sean Kelvin, who was the last person to see Jenna Barnum alive. Jenna was found dead in her home. Clark tells the chauffeur to turn the car around. The Torch office. Chloe's at the computer and she hears a sound outside the office. She goes out to investigate. She sees a trail of yellow rose petals and is intrigued. Outside the Beanery. Clark tells Lana to wait inside so she would be safe. Lana questions him and he says he would come back to explain. He tells her that this was the best non-date he's ever had. Chloe follows the trail of rose petals to the pool. A sign on the door says, "Come in please." She enters and finds it dark. She calls out that she agreed to a cappuccino but not skinny-dipping. The door locks and Chloe sees Icy Sean. She asks what happens to him and he replies that he can't get warm. She tells to sit by a fire, and he says it doesn't last long -- body heat is better. He pushes Chloe into the pool. He holds his hands over it, absorbing the heat and turning the pool into ice. Chloe manages to swim to the other side of the pool but her foot gets stuck in the ice. Clark appears at the pool door. He breaks into the room, punches through the ice and pulls Chloe's foot out of the pool. He helps her to the door and tells her to run. Clark turns around but Sean is gone. The Torch office. Chloe is researching Sean's condition on the Internet. She says she found something about damage to the brain that makes it so that he's like a battery that lost its charge. Clark says he wants to get Chloe home. As she stands up, she tells Clark, "almost getting my heat sucked was not an attempt to ruin your date." Clark remembers Lana at the Beanery. The Beanery. Pete walks in with a girl and she sits down just as Pete spots Lana. He walks over and asks why she isn't fifth row center and where is Clark? Lana tells him that he saw a news report about Jenna and he took off. Lana asks Pete about why Clark is so ... "Clarklike." They agree that he's pretty mysterious at times. Pete slips and says he can't imagine anything would be more important than her. Whitney comes in and asks Lana why she's there and says she's pretty dressed up just to be reading. Lana offers the limo to Pete and asks Whitney to take her home. The Smallville Power Plant. Sean breaks the lock and gets inside. Clark goes back to the Beanery but Lana is no longer there. The lights dim. Clark says, "Sean." Sean has taken hold of some electric wires and is "getting charged" at the plant. At the Luthor Mansion, the lights go out and come back on. Lex comments that the generator must be working. Jonathan is still skeptical about Lex's help. Jonathan says he learned from someone that he shouldn't depend on others. Lex says Jonathan's father relied on government subsidy to keep his father going. Jonathan asks why Lex is trying so hard to help them. Lex replies simply that Clark saved him and gave him a new life. Whitney is driving Lana home. He is pretty upset about Lana going out on her non-date with Clark. Lana says she knows that Whitney would overreact. Suddenly Sean appears in the middle of the road. Whitney swerves into a ditch to avoid him. Whitney has totaled yet another truck. Lana says her ankle is twisted. Sean is nowhere in sight. Whitney looks up and sees that lights are on at the Luthor house. They head that way, Whitney holding up Lana. Back at the Luthor house. Lex offers Jonathan his deal, which is to provide state-of-the-art equipment for a share in the profit. Lex encourages Jonathan to think about it. At this point, Whitney and Lana are ushered in by a servant. Martha says, "Where's Clark?" Clark sees Whitney's bashed up truck. Sean comes around and gets a hold of Clark. Clark falls down and Sean thanks him for "the warm-up." Whitney and Lana are sitting by the fire. Lex says they are staying there until it's safe. Jonathan, on the other side of the room, tells Martha that he's still getting the answering machine at home [hey, I thought there was a power outage?!]. Martha is worried, but Jonathan says they shouldn't, because it's Clark. The lights flicker. Sean is outside with his hand on the generator. Clark is still out cold (so to speak). His ice-covered hand begins to move. Lex's house is lighted only by candles. Jonathan and Martha insist on going outside to investigate. Martha asks Lex where the generator is. Martha goes out and runs into Sean by the generator. Clark speeds up and tells his mother to get inside the house. Sean tells Clark that his mom is hot. They fight. Sean flies across the screen. Clark goes to follow him. Sean comes up from behind and starts sucking Clark's heat. Sean says "I don't know what it is about you, but I haven't felt this good in two days." Sean says after he's done with Clark he's going inside to suck the heat out of the rest of them. Clark says he's not going to let him hurt them and throws Sean off. Sean lands in the pond, and it freezes over. The next day at the Kent Farm. Lex comes into the barn (where Jonathan is tinkering with another piece of equipment, this time his motorcycle). Lex asks if he's reconsidered his offer. Lex says he's trying to insure Clark's future. Jonathan says at least with the bank, he knows where he stands. Lex says the offer stands and leaves. Smallville High School. Chloe is staring at a shrine to Jenna. Clark approaches and asks if she's OK. Chloe says she was just thinking that it could have been her, just because she was caught up in a guy. She thought she was stronger than that. Clark says everyone is searching for their soul mate, and it's not a sign of weakness. Pete says he can't believe their dates went to hell while he got the limo. Chloe swears off men. Clark says they're not all that bad. Pete teases her saying maybe she should just swear off "heat-sucking horn dogs." Chloe says next time she goes out with someone, she's doing an in-depth background check. They spot Lana in the hall, and Chloe tactfully pulls Pete in the opposite direction. Clark approaches Lana and asks about her ankle. She says it's better. Lana mentions that he didn't come back the other night. Clark says he did, but she was gone. He apologizes and asks for another try. Lana says Whitney is taking her to the city because their non-date freaked him out. Clark asks what Lana told him. Lana says, "The truth. That we're just friends." CLark asks Lana what she sees in Whitney. She says that Whitney helps her feel safe. She walks away, leaving Clark standing there "standing still," as the song playing says. Famous Firsts: No one stalked Lana this time around! Just kidding. (No one stalked her in "Hothead," either, for those of you who are keeping score) Metropolis is again heard about but not seen in this episode, although if it's just a limo ride away, that would imply that it's only a few hundred miles away from Smallville, at the most. |
