Superman For All Seasons
Smallville explores the story of a young Clark Kent and his place in the world on television. In the comics, this was very well illustrated in Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's "Superman For All Seasons." This has been labeled a "must read" by many fans and also listed as the favorite Superman story of recent years by many. Check it out!

Superman Transformed!
In 1997 the creators of the Superman comics altered Clark's powers. Since it's a given that Smallville's Clark may be dealing with at least one electrical wraith, here's where you can find out what happened when things turned shocking for Superman. It's also good if you were away from the comics for a while and were wondering what that blue Superman thing was all about.

Smallville Executive Producer Talks To TheWB.com
(1/30) Smallville executive producer Alfred Gough was profiled at TheWB.com recently, and offered a few new tidbits for fans to discuss.

Regarding his favorite character, Gough said "We don't like to play favorites on Smallville, but the character who came to us the fastest and the clearest was Lex. We had him from the very first scene. And then when you get somebody like Michael Rosenbaum, somebody who is so magical, it makes it all the better. And who can resist watching someone you actually like become someone so evil?" He also revealed that Season 1 will not include a trip to Krypton, but "down the road we will."

Gough also revealed a challenge Clark will have to face in the future: "Somehow he is going to have to face this dilemma: If you can't be completely honest with someone, how can you possibly be a true friend?"

Smallville in SFX
(1/27) SmallvilleFanUK tells us that issue #88 of the UK science fiction magazine SFX has a feature on Smallville - "nothing new said, it's pretty similar to the Dreamwatch article as it's mainly an interview with Alfred Gough about how the show came about etc."

He also tells us that there are mini-interviews through the feature with Tom, Michael and Kristin.

Finally, the magazine's Spoiler Zone section has reviews of episodes from "X-Ray" to "Jitters" - positive reviews with all the episodes getting 4 stars out of 5 except "Craving" which gets 3. Considering SFX's initial reviews of the show were pretty negative, this is an improvement!

SFX #88 is now available in the United Kingdom; and it should hit the United States very soon.

don't steal this imageSmallville On The Cover Of Canadian TV Guide
(1/28) Tom Welling of Smallville is on the cover of the Feb. 2 edition of the Canadian editions of TV Guide. We're not sure yet what the content is on the inside, but the cover feature is about "five underappreciated TV faves." The other shows on TV Guide's list include The Education of Max Bickford, 24, Undeclared, and Degrassi: The Next Generation.

KryptonSite Geek of the WeekRoswell Crashes Down!
(1/30) "We knew going in that it was going to premiere very big. It's the new Superman show. I mean, it's like, I'm curious. There's a given curiosity factor that is going to bring people over to that show to just see it. 'Yeah, what's this new Superman thing they're doing?' So we knew that, and so we were prepared to let them have a big premiere and a solid follow-up rating or two. But after the bloom is off the rose, and they have to do it every week, then it's going to be a fair fight, and we'll just see what happens." -- Roswell co-executive producer Ronald D. Moore regarding Smallville, October 2001

Um... yeah. Three months later it seems the victor in the war of the teenage alien angst television series has been revealed. Roswell's season 3 order from UPN has been lowered down to 18 episodes for the year, and a 4th season does not look likely. Meanwhile, Smallville is already ordered for a second year. As for the bloom being off of the rose, Smallville's numbers have remained steady and the show still usually doubles the overnight ratings for Roswell. The word floating around regarding Roswell these days is "cancelled," but just to be on the safe side we're not reporting that - yet.

Not to sound like bad sports here at KryptonSite... we're sorry to the fans who lost their show... but we had to throw a big "YOU'RE WRONG" out there to the very first ever KryptonSite Geek of the Week, Ronald D. Moore. Sorry, dude.

Smallville in the New York Times
(1/27) Smallville was featured in a fairly large article in the Sunday, Jan. 27 edition of the New York Times.

The article refers to Smallville as a "breakout hit," and it features quotes by folks such as executive producer Miles Millar and Jeanette Kahn of DC Comics. Millar points out that the story of Smallville is "essentially the story of three orphans."

Executive Producer Alfred Gough also offered some comments, talking about the relationship between the young Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. "In our view of the characters, they really aren't that far apart. Clark is naïve about the world and Lex teaches him things about the way the world works which are going to be very valuable down the road."

Michael Rosenbaum on TeenHollywood.com
(1/25) The TeenHollywood.com website recently featured an interview with Smallville's Lex, Michael Rosenbaum.

In the very well-researched interview by Lynn Barker, Michael talked about character input, how he likes the mood to be on the set, and his dream role.

"I want to be the young Han Solo. If George Lucas goes to teenhollywood.com and reads this, he should give me an audition. I’m the perfect young Han Solo. Let’s see what was going on with him at a young age. I’d love it! I would also like to do a romantic comedy, like a Shallow Hal. I’d love to be a Jack Black. I love comedy. It’s my forte. Drama is a lot easier than comedy, no matter what anybody tells you. Timing is the most important thing. I guess, my whole life I always thought I had comic timing. I made people laugh and I want to continue to do that," Rosenbaum told the site.

Michael also talked about his relationship with the producers of Smallville and his input into the character of Lex. "They [the producers and writers] are gifted in that regard. They do their thing and I do mine. But, sometimes I have questions on things and we work together. It’s very collaborative. I call them all the time [putting hand in "phone" pose to his ear]. Hey, it’s Rosenbaum again. Can we talk? And we work it out."

For more of what Michael had to say, visit the TeenHollywood.com website.

Thanks to ShannenB2000 for the lead. Also, just for you and thanks to the EmotionalHermit... a new picture of Michael as Lex Luthor, evil and ready for you!

Tom Welling & Fiancee At The Golden Globe Awards
(1/21) Tom Welling (Clark) was a presenter at the 2002 Golden Globe Awards, and while there, fans were introduced to his girlfriend of two years, named Jamie. It was revealed that Tom and Jamie are getting married in July!
Sorry, ladies! Congratulations Tom and good luck!

To your right you can find a very, VERY small picture of the two of them from last night. If you click on the image, you can reach Deb's Golden Globes gallery which will give you some better looks at Tom and his future wife. You'll also find some shots of Tom presenting the award with Jessica Alba.

Annette O'Toole in Rolling Stone
(1/26) Hollytrue writes in to tell us that there is a photo of Annette O'Toole (Martha) on page 18 of the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Her husband Michael McKean (AKA David St. Hubbins)'s band Spinal Tap played a benefit gig at the House of Blues with Tenacious D. She is standing behind him in the photo while all on stage are performing "Big Bottom."

Can we get through this news item without calling her husband "Lenny?" Nope...

Faster Than A Speeding Hockey Puck...
(1/24) Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) will be one of many celebrities participating in a special celebrity hockey game on Wednesday, January 30. The proceeds are going to charities.

Michael will be a forward for "Bruckheimer's Bad Boys," a team led by the CSI producer. Teammates will include some of Smallville's competition (Roswell's Brendan Fehr and 24's Kiefer Sutherland), faces from the bad sitcoms past (Growing Pains' Alan Thicke and Full House's Dave Coulier), and even game show hosts (Jeopardy's Alex Trebek!) The opposing team, led by Ally McBeal writer/producer David E. Kelley, will include Michael's fellow Sorority boy Barry Watson, Jerry "I married Marcia in one of the Brady reunion movies" Houser, David Boreanaz (Angel), and Joshua Jackson (Dawson's Creek). Keep in mind that Pacey may have an unfair advantage, being a former Mighty Duck and all.

Special thanks to Delia for passing this along. You can find out more about the game, as well as how to buy tickets for as low as $10 and $25, at http://www.nhl.com/allstar2002/celebritygame.html. CORRECTION: We erroneously posted that the game would be televised on ESPN and the CBC. Oops, we were wrong! :-( But, highlights from the game should be shown on E! Entertainment Television on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7PM (ET) and Sunday, Feb. 3 at 9AM (ET). BIG thanks to ShannenB2000 for the correction.

Smallville Trading Cards On The Way!
(1/24) A release date has not been set, but Russ Dimino tells us that Inkworks has signed a deal to make officially licensed Smallville trading cards sometime in 2002. We'll let you know if/when we hear more.

Fanfiction, Anyone?
(1/23) Until the Fanfiction section of KryptonSite is up (which still may be a few weeks or months away), fans are invited to post their fan-written Smallville stories over at a special Fanfiction section of the KryptonSite message board.

Moderated by the lovely, talented, and "as determined as Chloe Sullivan" Kat Picson (KMP to those who know her around here), the board even features monthly fanfiction "challenges." So what are you waiting for? Visit the board!

Kelly Brook At E! Online
(1/20) Kelly Brook (Victoria) was recently interviewed at the E! Online website.

Kelly (who describes her character as "the opposite of Lana Lang") revealed that she met with Michael Rosenbaum before the first day of shooting. "I came to Vancouver a week beforehand and phoned [Michael Rosenbaum] as soon as I got there," Kelly revealed. "I said, 'Look, we have to meet up and go out.' I hated the thought of me, like, on my first day on the set not knowing anyone and then having to kiss this guy I've never met.

"I was in this jazz bar, and he came by. We had a few drinks. We had a dance, and that kind of broke the ice. And then a few days later, we rehearsed the actual scene in his house. We had a lot of friends around, and one of them played the boom operator, and one of them was the cameraman--we had it on video camera. And we just hammed it up, playing the scene over and over again. It was good, because by the first day of shooting, it was old hat. We had done it a million times--not the making out but the scene."

You can read the complete article by visiting E! Online.

Michael Rosenbaum Featured At Scifi Wire
(1/19) Michael Rosenbaum (Lex) talked to Scifi Wire at the recent Winter Press Tour of the Television Critic's Association.

Michael started by talking about Lex's inevitable descent into evil, but assured that he doesn't want it to happen right away. "I talk to the writers, and when there's something that's questionably evil, I say, 'You know what? Not yet," he said. "And they're like, 'No, no. This is good, because then we show that it was OK, like he had good intentions.' [But] he does things that show that dark side. People will f--k with him. That's when you see Lex. [But] he's [still] a good guy. He's a good judge of character."

Michael also talks about some things Lex will get to do in upcoming episodes, and he also addresses the big question of whether or not Lex knows Clark's secret. Does he? Visit the Scifi Wire and find out!

Changes Ahead For Smallville?
(1/17) WB entertainment president Jordan Levin told reporters at the Winter Press Tour of the Television Critics' Association that while they are happy with Smallville's performance, one thing will be changing in the show's future.

"What you're going to start to see is some smaller, sort of mini-arcs over the course of three or four episodes, where we do get away from some of the formulaic storytelling structure that we sort of getting ourselves boxed into," Levin explained, saying that the "Kryptonite villain of the week" formula was becoming a little too predictable. He also revealed that the show will be "building up its mythology" -- as past shows like The X-Files and Buffy have over time -- by building up the popular Lex Luthor, played by Michael Rosenbaum.

The show will begin to focus more on Lex's studies into uncovering Clark's secrets. Clark will also start learning more about his powers and how to keep them in check.

Levin assured that despite the possibility of some continuing plots on the show, each episode will still remain self-contained. "We don't want to turn it into a serialized show," he said. "We do want to retain a closed-ended format, but we want to extend our mythology."

Thanks to Karen for the lead.

Smallville in Cinescape Magazine
(1/17) Issue #57 of Cinescape magazine (with Hayden Christensen and Darth Vader on the cover) has now hit newsstands, and inside one can find interviews with several people involved with the production of Smallville.

In the article by Eric Moro, executive producer Joe Davola reveals that Smallville originally was intended as a different series altogether -- Tollin-Robbins Productions had developed a pilot episode script based on the young Batman called Bruce Wayne. When they were unable to get the rights to go ahead with the project, Tollin-Robbins asked WB president Peter Roth about a young Clark Kent series. Roth then got in touch with Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. "We came to them with the idea and they really created the show," Davola said. "They came up with the whole meteor shower, Lex Luthor moving into Smallville, and all that. That's basically how the project got started."

Executive producer Alfred Gough talked about the many relationships of the characters and how he'd like to bring people from other Superman incarnations into the show. He also talked about a much-asked-for guest. "I'd love to see Bruce Wayne come to Smallville," Gough said. "Maybe he went to boarding school with Lex or something. I don't know; I'm just saying it would be fun to have him come to Smallville. The DC Universe is so great and, again, a lot of that comes down to obviously their confidence in the show. But honestly, it's about money and licensing."

Joe Davola also offered some hints about the future. "There is a spaceship that's in Clark's storm cellar that hasn't been opened yet, but maybe it will some day," he said, "and there was a key that Jonathan gave Clark in the pilot episode and mabe he'll be able to decode stuff." ("Clark's thingie" on the message boards! - Craig) He also revealed that Gough and Millar have laid out a bible for the series.

Finally, the magazine also interviewed Tom Welling about his role as Clark Kent. A lot was covered, but among other things, Welling was asked if the series would move to Metropolis after Clark Kent "graduates" from high school. "I don't know what the plan is," Tom told the magazine. "We actually don't know what's going to happen in the next episode we shoot. They'll probably let us know the day before. (Or they read KryptonSite spoilers! - Craig again)

You can find Cinescape at many bookstores across the United States. You can also possibly order it through Cinescape's website (http://www.cinescape.com)

First Smallville, Then Metropolis?
(1/16) Sci Fi Wire recently talked to Smallville executive producers Mike Tollin and Brian Robbins, where they revealed some interesting tidbits about Smallville's possible future. "We're going to eventually get to Metropolis more," Tollin said in an interview. "We've just gotten to Metropolis, as you've seen. I couldn't tell you year X and show X, but we're going to slowly see the evolution of Lex, to get closer to what people expect, and these kids are going to head to the big city a little bit more."

Tollin also acknowledged to Sci Fi Wire that Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane would have to be the same age as Clark and the gang, but he added that they may not meet until the whole group is much older. "It's tricky. How long do you keep kids in high school?"

Other tidbits about the show's future, including the possibility of an appearance by a future Dark Knight, came up as well. Brian Robbins also confirmed that there will be more "crime" episodes like "Rogue" and less "Kryptonite villain" stories in the future.

(1/15) The WB announced Tuesday that Smallville has been renewed for a second season. Showing confidence in their Tuesday night lineup, Gilmore Girls has been renewed for another year as well.

Considering the ratings for the series so far, this should come as no surprise. Congratulations to the cast and crew for a job well done!

Music For A "Rogue"
(1/16) Here's a list of some of the music heard in Tuesday night's new episode...
