Smallville Comic Book Details!
Some more information has surfaced about the Smallville comic book, which will be released to comic book stores on September 18.

The comic book features new stories by Mark Verheiden ("Rogue") and Michael Green ("Cool") and features artwork by Roy A. Martinez (Wonder Woman) and John Paul Leon (Earth X).

DC Comics' description of the lead story tells us this:

"What do you get when you mix Kryptonite and dinosaurs? A teenage raptor with a taste for Smallville students! Clark's powers are put to the test as he struggles to contain the creature while not revealing his super-abilities to Lana and the rest of Smallville High."

The 64-page comic book will also feature some behind-the-scenes stories and interviews about the show.

Smallville: The Comic will have a cover price of $3.95. We are assuming that the image accompanying this article is the comic book's cover.

Smallville Cover On 6/12 Daily Variety: Updated
The June 12, 2002 edition of Daily Variety had a cover featuring Tom, Kristin, and Michael above a Smallville cityscape and says "For Your Emmy Consideration." Sadly, the Emmy voters usually have a habit of ignoring science fiction genre shows, but we can hope!

Some places may still have days-old copies; if not surely some will pop up on EBay soon. To your right is an image of the cover, thanks to KryptonSite's resident Evil Clown.

Shawn Ashmore Will Be In X-Men 2
Shawn Ashmore, who played the popular freak of the week "Eric Summers" in the Smallvile episode "Leech," will indeed be playing Bobby Drake/Iceman in the upcoming sequel to the movie X-Men.

Ariel from the Alternative Ashmore website tells us that Shawn is athletic training for many hours a day with a strict diet and no alcohol for the next four months. The movie will be shot in Vancouver, B.C. during that time.

Another familiar Smallville sight will make an appearance in the film as well. Lex Luthor's mansion will be used as the Xavier Institute, owned by the also-bald Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart).

X-Men 2 is due out next year.

Fairer Ratings Next Season?
The June 11 edition of USA Today revealed that the Nielsen ratings system will change the way it does things in September, and the changes will more accurately affect how shows with high teenage demographics are metered.

This means that the ratings for Smallville may be more accurately represented and could add a few million viewers to its final totals. More viewers means more ad revenue, and more ad revenue means the longer the show will remain on the hour. In short: This is very good news.

The article was accompanied by an image of Kristin Kreuk and Tom Welling which of course you can find right by this news item.

E!'s Wanda Reveals Another Season 2 Tidbit
E! Online's Wanda revealed some quotes from executive producer Alfred Gough about Season 2 last week (you can also find those same tidbits on the KryptonSite spoilers page). She also revealed another quote that is so minor we're not even bothering to put it there:

"Through the course of the season, the tornado puts everybody on a different trajectory. There's big surprises. We've sort of turned everybody on their ear."

You can find this week's Wanda column by clicking here.

Michael Rosenbaum Wins A Saturn Award
Michael Rosenbaum (Lex) received an award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series at the 2002 Saturn Awards last night in Century City, CA. Michael joked that originally he thought he was going to win a Saturn car. Oops. He said he was happy that it was his first award since "Most Improved Speller" in first grade.

Smallville was up for several other categories but unfortunately did not win. But hey, Michael got his well-deserved recognition! Congratulations!

TV Guide Includes Smallville Covers Among The "Greatest Covers Of All Time"
TV Guide has recently done another anniversary issue (June 15-21) celebrating the magazine's 50-year history. The latest spotlights the magazine's best covers, and sure enough, on page 36, you can find the 4-cover set from December 2001 featuring the cast of Smallville.

The article reveals that the original painting recently sold for $20,000. You can find TV Guide at newsstands and grocery stores across the United States.

Annette O'Toole In New Movie
"Temptation" is a film which stars Annette O'Toole (Martha Kent) as half of a longtime married couple - one of two New Age, politically correct "erotic filmmakers" about to call it quits until they find some compromising 20-year-old footage of primetime TV's current #1 star. Suddenly, this causes a media frenzy and Annette's character Nora and husband Phil (Lyn Vaus) receive loads of offers for the footage.

The "Temptation" website describes the film as "a humorous journey into a spiritually empty vortex of their own unwitting greed, distrust and ambition."

Unfortunately for fans of Ms. O'Toole (who also co-produced the movie), the film does not yet have a distributor so there's no word yet on when or where the film (shot last year) will be released. We'll keep you updated if we hear anything, and if any distributors are reading, pick it up so we can see the movie! In the meantime, fans of Annette O'Toole are welcomed to visit the "Temptation" site and see what it's all about. Adjoining this article you can see a picture of Annette from the film.

Attention producers: We like this hairstyleKristin Kreuk In June 9 Parade
Kristin Kreuk (Lana) is interviewed by James Brady in the June 9 editions of the Parade magazine insert which is featured in newspapers across the United States.

The article features a great new photo of Kristin which you can see right beside this article.

Of course, Kristin talked about Smallville: "For me, it's the relationships -- between the families and especially between Clark and Lex Luthor, who wasn't evil from the start but in whom the bad is now coming out."

She also talked about her role doing commercials for Neutrogena. "Doing commercials is very strange, but once you relax it can be funny and goofy, too."

The article also reveals that Kristin has recently bought her own place and is "hard at work fixing it up," and says that Kristin's younger sister and family are quite cool with her new celebrity.

If you received this news too late, don't fret! Run to your local library and they should have papers from the last few days.

Courtesy of Wizard MagazineJeph Loeb Answers Smallville Questions For KryptonSite
As announced yesterday, Superman comics writer Jeph Loeb will be a consulting producer and writer for Smallville for the second season. Mr. Loeb was kind enough to answer some questions for KryptonSite. His answers are below:

KRYPTONSITE: How did you get involved with the project?

JEPH LOEB: I've been a fan of the show since Day 1. Actually before Day 1 because I saw a very early cut of the show and really fell in love with the characters. Then, as the show progressed, there were little winks here and there from the comics and from SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS. The most flattering was/is that the bridge that Luthor drives off of in the pilot and hits Clark? It's called The Loeb Bridge. How could you NOT love a show with a bridge named after someone who has the same name as me! Recently, the guys (Al Gough and Miles Millar, the show's creators and exectutive producers) wanted to meet me to talk about general stuff -- the characters, how I saw the show, things like that. By the time the meeting was over, I told them that either I had to come work for them or I had to stop watching the show since I couldn't keep my brain thinking of new episodes and character bits. I think it was more of a mercy hiring than anything else. Al and Miles just couldn't see me in a mental institution or they didn't want to lose a viewer, I'm not sure which. In any event, it had a happy ending.

KS: How would you compare writing the TV Clark Kent to the one that you've written in the past for the comics?

JL: Well, they're very different and at the same time, the same. I know that sounds odd, but for the most part, I've written Clark as an adult, and married to Lois Lane. I suppose the closest thing to the show is in SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS -- but even then, that is my interpretation and not Al and Miles'. So, while I bring with me a fountain of knowledge about the character, who I love and admire, the joy of writing and thinking about SMALLVILLE is that Clark is a young man who is learning what the road is like to becoming the world's greatest hero. The best part is being able to play in this incredibly fertile ground of the Clark Kent/Lex Luthor dynamic when they are young men that doesn't exist in the present day comics. That's a pure creation of the show and the guys. It has wonderful dramatic irony whenever Clark and Lex get together. My favorite moment comes at the end of the episode called "Hug" when Luthor comments that their friendship will be the stuff of legends. Amazing.

KS: Would there ever be a possibility of seeing characters that originated on the show, such as Chloe Sullivan or Whitney, seen or referred to in the comic?

JL: That's more of a question for DC or for Superman Group Editor Eddie Berganza. I know that they have a Smallville Special planned and I assume that Chloe will appear there since it runs true with the show. I hope that DC puts out more Smallville comics -- it's a sure fire hit!

Thanks to Mr. Loeb for taking the time to answer questions for KryptonSite. Smallville Season 2 will likely premiere in October.

Smallville Featured In Many Recent Magazines
A recent trip to the newsstand reveals Smallville features in recent issues of several magazines. Here are some to look out for:

SFX -- The issue has a cover featuring Smallville and an interior interview with executive producer Al Gough where he offers his thoughts on episodes from the first half of Season 1. The issue also features an interview with Tom Welling.
Cult Times -- Michael Rosenbaum is featured.
Cult Times Special -- A little more expensive than the regular magazine but it features a great interview with Sam Jones III (Pete) that includes some photos that haven't popped up on the Web. Sam talks about the development of the Pete character, who should have a bit more to do next season, as Season 1 focused mostly on "Lex, Clark, and Lana."

Smallville Novels: More News!
We have been told that the Smallville novels written by comic book writers Roger Stern and Alan Grant are not part of the "young adult" series that has four books listed further down this page; instead, they're on thir own as part of another series aimed at a different audience.

The first Smallville novel in this series is written by Roger Stern. It is titled "Strange Visitors," and will be available in October. You can now pre-order it from Amazon.com and help support KryptonSite!

Stern in the past has written many well-received comics, including Superman, Starman, The Avengers, and more. He also was the writer of the VERY well-received "The Death and Life of Superman" novel, which is a must-read for the uninitiated.

Amazon also lists another novel on the site, which is written by comics writer Alan Grant (Batman: Shadow of the Bat). We are told that this separate series has "at least 4 novels" planned, with more on the way if sales go well.

Smallville Comic Book News!
Thanks to Mike Sangiacomo's "Journey into Comics" column which you can find at Newsarama, we now know some details about the Smallville comic book which should be out "sometime around October."

The comic's lead feature is written by Smallville writer Mark Verheiden ("Rogue," "X-Ray"). It is titled "The Beast," and is 24 pages long. It is drawn by Wonder Woman artist Roy A. Martinez.

After that is a story called "Exile" which clocks in at 10 pages long. The article says it is "written by TV writer Chris Green" but we're suspecting that they may mean Michael Green of "Cool" fame. That story tells "a day in the life of Lex Luthor," and is drawn by John Paul Leon (Earth X).

The one-shot comic book will also have features and interviews about the show and a preview of Season 2.

Editor Eddie Berganza told Sangiacomo that if DC Comics were to do more Smallville, he'd love to fill some gaps between episodes or include missing scenes. "I really want to be a companion to the show," he said. "This is meant to be for fans of the show, who may not necessarily be comic book fans or even Superman fans … gasp! It really will be unlike any other Superbook."

Keep reading KryptonSite for more information on the comic. Those interested in reading the comics might also be interested in Action Comics #791, now on sale, which features a tale of Clark Kent in Smallville.

You may have noticed Lex reading some e-mail in "Tempest." Well, in the true WB/Smallville fashion, apparently you can hack in and read the e-mail yourself at the LuthorCorp.net website!

The e-mails are said to reveal some hints about Lex's plans to buy out the Smallville plant, including correspondence with Gabe Sullivan. We're told there are some big hints about Season 2 within.

Of course, the site has a password, but some folks over on the KryptonSite message board have figured it that one out, if you'd like to cheat! From there you'll also find some instructions on how to actually get there. Enjoy!
