 Interview: Justin Hartley Talks Smallville Season 10

At the Smallville 200th Episode Red Carpet on September 25, KryptonSite and several other media outlets spoke with members of the show's cast and crew for exclusive interviews.
We've been posting interviews here on KryptonSite for the past few weeks, and more are coming between now and the airing of the show's 200th episode on Friday, October 15, but now it's time to have some words with Justin Hartley, who plays Oliver Queen, a.k.a. the Green Arrow, on the series.

I hear Oliver is going to have a different approach to the whole secret identity thing soon.
He thinks it's a brilliant idea to let everybody know who he is. So, let me tell you something. Don't ever tell anybody who you are, for real. You know what I mean? Like, nobody knows me. People think they do, but nobody knows me. I'm kidding.
So Oliver tells everybody that he's the Green Arrow. He has a press conference and is like "I'm Green Arrow." That's going to happen soon, and then he feels all of the residual effects of that.
Does he do that as an attempt to get someone to bring Chloe back?
He does that as an attempt to get Chloe to bring Chloe back, I believe. That's what I kind of saw.
What is his reaction to Chloe being gone?
He's having a hard time wrapping his brain around the fact that he chose to leave, so he's kind of internalizing the whole thing and creating this scenario where he was forced; that someone's taken her. Clark finally has to come to him and say "Hey, listen, man. Look what's going on. These women are choosing to leave us." So, that kind of helps in his quest to come out and say "look, they're choosing to leave us because we have these secret identities, and if we didn't have 'em... they wouldn't have left. She didn't leave me; she left Green Arrow, so if I come out and say that's who I am..." It's complicated right now.
Once Green Arrow is "out," does that mean he doesn't have to wear the green suit so much?
You would think so, damn it! How many times have I made that phone call? But no. They tell me that I've still gotta wear it.
That thing is beat to hell, but I continue to wear it.
I hear you're directing an episode this season?
I'm directing Episode 20. It's so great, because it's set up so I can watch the most possible episodes [in the season]. Watch all of the information get turned around and displayed before I take the helm, and I have all of these great people helping me, so it's going to be a lot fun. A lot of hard work, but a lot of fun.
How did it come about for you to be writing an episode in Season 9?
I inquired about it, and then what I did is I wrote a spec with my partner Walter Wong, and presented it to them, and said "well, this is kind of what can we do. Is it possible to get one of these episodes?" They read it, and they loved it, and then they teamed us with Bryan Q. Miller, who was gracious enough to let us write with him, and we made it happen. It was Kelly and Brian. People believing in you, that's how all of this stuff happens.
