Having given ourselves a good base knowledge of the Superman character,
I would now like to recommend the most widely publicized event in the
history of the post-Crisis Superman, his death. While meeting to hammer
out the next year of Super stories, the Superman creative team casually
considered killing Superman temporarily. Not an imaginary story, and not
a case of Superman faking his death, but an actual, soul leaving the body,
death. Though a bit more serious than many death stories, this was not
seen by the creators as anything more than a temporary story arc that
might appeal to the readers. Little did they know the media circus it
would bring out as the general public, most of which hadn’t read
a Superman comic in decades, if at all, cried foul that the hero they
never follow was going to die. Of course, the slightly more patient comic
book reader knew he would somehow return from the dead, but even with
that knowledge the final scene of Superman’s demise, and the cover
of that issue, were both wonderful and powerful. If you haven’t read
the story before, take this moment to find out just how selfless Superman
really is as he finally sacrifices everything to save Metropolis in this
first of three TPBs in the saga of Superman's death.

Superman For All Seasons
Smallville explores the story of
a young Clark Kent and his place in the world on television. In the comics,
this was very well illustrated in Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's "Superman For
All Seasons." This has been labeled a "must read" by many fans and also
listed as the favorite Superman story of recent years by many. Check it
out!
Superman: Peace on Earth
Were you impressed by Alex Ross's recent TV Guide covers
featuring Smallville? Thought so. In 1998, Ross painted the oversized
Superman:
Peace on Earth graphic novel which is written by Paul Dini of Batman:
The Animated Series fame. Every page is worth framing. Ross
also painted similar books for Batman,
Wonder
Woman, and Captain
Marvel.
