                                WARNING:
Some spoilers for Season 8 may be within.
                                With
the eighth season of Smallville approaching
in a little over a month, message forums and
blogs are full of people talking about what
they'd like to see in the new year. This gave
me the inspiration and the chance to share my
own preferences for what I'd like to see in
                                  the eighth season.
                                I
do go into this with a few rules - none of my
preferences are shipper-based; so you won't
see "I want xxx and yyy together."
I'm also not including things that have already
been announced, such as the appearances of Green
Arrow and the Justice League, Martian Manhunter,
Clark at the Daily Planet, and that sort of
thing. I also am not including things that seem
impossible, like Clark in the Superman suit.
This is just me - a long-time Superman fan majorly
into Smallville - sharing my opinion.
Here's what I'd like to see, keeping in mind
that I'll probably forget something along the
                                  way:

                                       10.
The Daily Planet: Show us why. Neither
Clark Kent nor Lois Lane have college
degrees; neither does Chloe, though it's
said that she's working on it in Offscreenville.
So how did they manage to get articles
                                        - possibly even front-page ones - into
the Daily Planet? Did Perry White do a
favor for Clark? Does the General have
                                        top-secret information about somebody?
I understand that at times certain circumstances
have put them into the paper, and I recognize
that they're just in the basement, but
the Daily Planet is supposed to be the
greatest newspaper in the world - so what
did they do to get in at such young ages
                                        to such a competitive workplace?

Less love triangles and more action. The
                                  spoilers
that seem to leak out first are the relationship-based
ones, and those are the ones that get the fandom
riled up and bickering with people the most.
But you know what? I don't care if Clark is
                                  with Lana/Lois/Chloe/Maxima/Shelby/Lex/whoever
this week. I want to see him embracing his destiny
and being Superman. The soap opera stuff isn't
and never was really for me.
                                8.
A photo gallery. I'm tired of looking at
                                  the same
old pictures from Season 6. The word on
the street is that new shots have been taken
                                  - and I will welcome them. On that same note,
they might want to re-shoot the shots for the
opening titles, since there are so many new
                                  cast members this year.

7.
Give the Green Arrow his own show already.
I don't want GreenArrowVille to take over Smallville,
but I do think Justin Hartley is leading man
material and deserves his own series already.
I'm tired of The CW lining him up for subpar
projects when there is one that I know everyone
would like to see. Bonus if the Black Canary
comes along, double bonus if it's a Justice
League spin-off... it's been a few years since
Justice was canned; is the title available
                                  again?
                                6.
Proper resolution for Kara. They're not
really going to leave her in the Phantom
Zone, are they? Plus, Laura Vandervoort was
really good in the role, and seemed popular...
so I hope we have not seen the last of her.
                                  A Green Arrow/Supergirl team-up like those seen
in Justice League Unlimited would be
                                  welcomed, too.

5.
Heroic Clark. Not "Clark goaded by
the Green Arrow," and not "Clark who
needs Chloe to tell him how to properly be a
hero." Superman is the greatest hero there
is, or rather, should be... and it's never fun
to see the show when even the most minor characters
seem more heroic than he is. Let's see him relishing
doing the right thing, unencumbered by his romantic
entanglements and instead becoming the hero
we all know him to be.

4.
Martha Kent & Perry White. I include
these two together because Annette O'Toole and
Michael McKean are married in real life, and
if you get one, you should just get them both.
The presence of Martha Kent was sorely missed
in Season 6, and I have a lot of trouble comprehending
how Clark could go missing for a few months
and Martha would not be looking for him. (Hopefully
there will be a line in the premiere that she
was looking for him in Offscreenville) As for
Perry, that episode was such a fantastic guest
shot, and Michael McKean did a terrific job...
not to mention, the Daily Planet needs him.
If McKean is unable or unwilling to return,
maybe his lookalike Harry Groener (Buffy's
                                  Mayor) is available.

                                    |
                                       3.
                                        Forgotten Characters. In addition
to Martha and Perry, there have been many
characters from the first 7 seasons who
                                        were interesting and/or forgotten. Where's
Lucas Luthor? Wouldn't he come to town
and claim what may rightfully be his after
the death of his father and the disappearance
of Lex? How will Gabe Sullivan react to
his daughter's imprisonment? Can we see
Aunt Nell again because she was positively
                                        creepy in Millennium? I'd also
give the show's producers major bonus
points if they give us a way-back callback
                                        - like, say, including Jeremy Creek (Adrian
McMorran) in the series' final episode.

                                     |

2.
More Justice Leaguers. I'm glad to hear
that Black Canary, Aquaman, and the Green Arrow
will be in the Season 8 premiere. But what about
Impulse and Cyborg - especially Bart,
who was one of the most entertaining characters
to speed through the series? I'd love to see
Smallville's take on the Green Lantern
as well, and while we're on the subject of characters
who have been written excellently by Geoff Johns,
how about someone lesser-known, like Booster
Gold? I also really wish that someone
at Warner Bros. would finally allow Smallville
to have Bruce Wayne, even if it's for just
one episode, and even if it's a cameo - it would
give us long-time watchers something to really
                                  enjoy.
                                And
now, the #1 thing I'd like to see in Season
                                  8...

1.
                                  Michael Rosenbaum. I cannot stress
this enough: the #1 thing that I think most
fans would agree on is that a return appearance
by Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor in Season
8 is a must, especially if it is the last year
                                  - you can't end it with Clark and not Lex. I
keep hoping that a big announcement that Michael
is coming back is coming soon. So, TPTB and
                                  Michael, make it happen, please?
                                And
if it is the final season... and this is not
meant as part of my Top Ten, though perhaps
it should be... I hope Smallville has a good
and appropriate ending and that the show's creators
have time to prepare and build toward the end.
I'd hate it if the show was coasting, expecting
to get to Season 9, and then we'd get no real
end. ALF did that to me, and for that
I've never forgiven them... heck, even Lois
& Clark didn't do their fourth season
expecting it to be the end.
                                Thanks
for reading. Now let's hope at least one of
                                  these things comes to pass....
