Is Smallville's CW Replacement Raven Of The Teen Titans?
Other DC Comics adaptations - such as a possible Blue Beetle TV show hinted by Geoff Johns or projects said to be in development such as Sandman - haven't had a lot of action lately, and even news on David E. Kelley's Wonder Woman treatment has been silent.
Now, Variety is reporting that The CW has ordered a script for a TV series based on one of DC Comics' Teen Titans, Raven. It is surely being eyed as a possible replacement for Smallville, which concludes in May.
Al Septien has revealed that he will be directing the 16th episode of Smallville's tenth and final season. The title of the episode is "Scion," and it is written by Septien and Turi Meyer.

Tonight's episode of Smallville adds Teri Hatcher to the list of actors or actresses from previous incarnations of the Superman legend to return to the fold. It's not without precedence - after all, Teri is the third "Lois" to play a successor's mother!
Longtime KryptonSite (and before that, Krypton Club) staple Russ Dimino takes a look back in a very special new column.

Perry White Returning To Smallville?
Today on Twitter, a fan asked Michael McKean if his character of Perry White would be returning to Smallville.
His response? "Once more, for sure."
Will his real-life wife Annette O'Toole (Martha Kent) be coming too? When will this happen? Could it be for May's series finale? Who knows. What we do know is that more McKean on Smallville is always a good thing, and if Annette is around, it's even better.

A New Story Of Superman Begins With The Superman: Earth One Graphic Novel
In every generation, popular writers in the comic book medium seem to want to spin their own "takes" on the Superman legend. John Byrne did it in 1986; in the past decade, Geoff Johns, Mark Waid, and Grant Morrison have all taken their swings at Superman's history and early years.
Now, DC Comics has released their original graphic novel Superman: Earth One. It's a tale of Superman at pretty much the same age you see him on Smallville, but of course the history is a bit different. The hardcover is written by J. Michael Strazynski (Babylon 5) with REALLY good artwork by Shane Davis. If you want to get in on the ground floor of a new Superman story, check it out!
Retail price for the graphic novel is $19.99; Amazon.com has it available to pre-order now for only $10.99 (price subject to change).
So When Is Geoff Johns' Next Episode On The Schedule?
One of the most exciting bits of news for Smallville Season 10 at Comic-Con was the announcement that Geoff Johns would be returning to write another episode of the series, this time featuring Blue Beetle and Booster Gold.
KryptonSite has learned that this episode will be falling in the final third of the season. No final placement has been announced yet, but as soon as more news comes, we'll be happy to share it!

Helen Slater & Julian Sands Returning To Smallville
A recently-released episode description might give the hint as to when that might be happening, which brought out a lot of speculation. Julian Sands and I are doing an episode. I wish it was more because it was so much fun doing it. But I guess they've got it all written. We're just doing one episode.

Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson Talk About Teri Hatcher On Smallville
As mentioned in an earlier post, Smallville Executive Producers Brian Peterson & Kelly Souders spoke with the press on Friday after a screening of Friday's 200th episode, "Homecoming."
One point touched upon by the producers was the casting of Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane's mother, Ella Lane, in an upcoming episode titled "Abandoned." The episode airs in November, and some spoilers may follow.
"We have our dream list, and that's right up at the top," Peterson said. "The video actually came from a personal story. This actually happened for somebody in the [writers'] room. Her best friend just found out she has a very significant illness and is dying momentarily, so she sat down and made all of these videos for her child. With Ella, was we just pulled that into the show, because it was so heart-wrenching. Then we thought 'Who do you get to play Lois' mom?' Then everybody just looked at each other and it was like, beat, beat... Teri Hatcher! And she's been fantastic," Brian continued.
"She was wonderful," Kelly added. "We got to watch the footage yesterday, and all I will say is I watched three takes, and then I had to stop for a while, because it was so heart-wrenching, and she had an incredible performance. It was beautiful."
As for Teri's former Lois & Clark co-star Dean Cain, Brian Peterson shared that he was aware that the former Clark Kent, who played Curtis Knox in "Cure," had recently talked about the notion of returning to Smallville. "We would love to have him back, actually," he said. "I think that may be on his wish as well as ours, so if that happens, that would be fantastic."
Episode #200 of Smallville airs on Friday. Teri Hatcher's episode, "Abandoned," will be on in November. Keep reading KryptonSite for an air date as soon as it is confirmed.
SMALLVILLE 200: Flashback: Al Gough Previews Smallville!
This week in celebration and preparation for Smallville's 200th episode on Friday, we'll be posting a number of flashbacks, new interviews, and more here at KryptonSite throughout the week.
"Homecoming" is a fantastic look to the past as well as a propeller to the future. Hopefully you'll like it.
The first Smallville 200 feature we're posting this week is the interview that first put KryptonSite on the map - our interview with former Executive Producer and show co-creator Alfred Gough, conducted around the time the pilot episode was being filmed. Many of you have probably seen the interview before but for those of you who haven't - it might be a fun look to see how much has changed between early 2001 when this interview happened and the present.
We hear Allison Mack was at the convention this weekend as well, promoting her role in the webseries Riese. If we can get a hold of any images from there, we will post those here on KryptonSite!

Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson Talk About Planning Smallville's Conclusion
Fortunately for us, there are still twenty episodes left in Smallville's future, but for the show's Executive Producers, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson, the time to think about the show's end is now.
Speaking with the press after a screening of next week's 200th episode this morning, Souders and Peterson shared their current status as well as talking about possibilities for spin-offs, movies, and even Season 11.
"As of Tuesday, we pretty significantly know the rest of the series," Brian Peterson revealed. "That was pretty daunting," Souders added. "We were all sitting in the writers' room, and we looked up at the board, and we had it all mapped out. Everything's now mapped out. We thought, 'Wow. That's it.'"
"Instead of End of Episode, or End of Season, it said End of Series," Brian added.
"I think we are very aware it's a decade of people watching," Kelly Souders said about creating a satisfying finale for longtime viewers. "That's a long time, so not only is there the pressure of wanting to make everybody happy, which is completely impossible, but we keep trying; but also, I think ourselves, the writing staff, the crew, our post - everyone wants it to end with the best episode of Smallville ever. We all want to make sure that it's the best thing that any of us could put together," she said.
"With any show, you want it to end the way you want it to end as a viewer, but then you also want a little surprise," Peterson teased.
When asked about the possibility of a Season 11, Brian Peterson said he was not aware of any plans for a change of heart. "As much as we all don't want it to end, you need the show to go out when the time is right, and it feels like the time is probably right for that, as much as we all will be very sad. That said, you never know. We could be as surprised as anyone else," Brian said.
Regarding the possibility of taking Smallville to the big screen, Kelly Souders said that that notion would be "a blast." "We would love to do that, but there are no plans in the works at the moment," Souders said. Sadly, "we don't know of any plans" also is the response regarding a possible spin-off to continue the Smallville franchise.
Stay tuned to KryptonSite within the past week for more interviews, including more dialogue with Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson. Don't miss an all-new episode, "Supergirl," tonight at 8PM on The CW and then be sure to come back next week for the show's 200th episode!

EW's Michael Ausiello has revealed that Smallville showrunners/ executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders will be developing a new TV drama... and sadly, it's not a Smallville spin-off.
The project they will be possibly working on is called The Last Hope, and it's loosely based on professional finder-of-lost-loves Troy Dunn. The project, in association with Warner Bros. Television, will team Souders & Peterson with McG, who was also going to team with them on the Dick-Grayson-before-he's-Robin The Graysons when it was a possibility two years ago.
Interview: Justin Hartley Talks About Oliver Queen's Smallville Future
At the Smallville 200th Episode Red Carpet on September 25, KryptonSite was able to speak with many people involved with the show, and now it's time to share what Justin Hartley had to say about a major decision for Oliver's Green Arrow career (warning: it's spoilery!) as well as what Justin will be doing behind the cameras later this year.
Hellcats' Aly Michalka Talks About Having Tom Welling As Her Boss
In addition to starring in Smallville, Tom Welling is an executive producer to The CW's new Wednesday night series Hellcats.
In a recent interview with the show's star, Aly Michalka, posted at KSiteTV, the actress spoke a bit about working with Tom Welling as a producer, and what she has learned from him.
When Aquaman (Alan Ritchson) returns in the ninth episode of Smallville's current season, someone else from the comics will be making an appearance alongside him.
Interview: Smallville Executive Producers Brian Peterson & Kelly Souders Talk Season 10
At the Smallville 200th Episode Red Carpet on September 25, KryptonSite was able to speak with many people involved with the show, including the show's executive producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson.
In the interview we're posting today, Peterson and Souders talk a bit about what to expect in episode #200 and beyond.
The upcoming Smallville episode "Patriot" just got a whole lot cooler.
IGN's Eric Goldman today is reporting that Battlestar Galactica's Michael Hogan has been cast in the role of Slade Wilson, better known to comic books fans as "Deathstroke," in at least two upcoming episodes of the series. The first is "Patriot;" the second title - which had not been revealed before IGN's article - is called "Icarus," and is the season's 11th episode.
Deathstroke is, by far, one of DC's coolest characters and it'll be fantastic to see him on the television screen. We'll surely see the eyepatch, but if he wears anything remotely close to his comic book costume, that would be great too.
Thanks to Mr. Video, we now have screen captures from a preview clip for next week's episode of Smallville. The clip itself doesn't appear to be online yet.
There was a preview clip released by USA Weekend yesterday; that can be found here. This scene features Erica Durance as Lois Lane and Michael Daingerfield as Godfrey.
Continuing our Smallville 200th Episode Red Carpet coverage, last weekend we spoke with Keri Lynn Pratt, who makes her Smallville debut as Cat Grant on tonight's episode, "Shield."
Don't forget a new Supernatural airs at 9PM (ET) after the show! Last week we were around 3 million viewers - can we make it a second week in a row? YES WE CAN!
Screen Captures From A "Shield" Preview Clip!
The CW has released a preview clip from the "Shield" episode of Smallville, and thanks to Mr. Video, we have screen captures from the released clip!
The scene features Keri Lynn Pratt as Cat and Justin Hartley as Green Arrow.
Interview: Tom Welling Talks About John Schneider's Return, Directing Smallville, & The Series Finale
At the Smallville 200th Episode Red Carpet on Saturday night, KryptonSite was one of several media outlets who had the opportunity to talk with members of cast and crew for exclusive interviews.
One of the folks we spoke with needs no introduction - Tom Welling, the man who has starred in all 197 episodes (so far!) to air of the show. In the interview, Tom talks about the upcoming episode he is directing, making the show as good as it can be, preparing for the end, and reuniting with John Schneider for last week's season premiere.
Erica Durance Teases Upcoming Episodes & Talks About The End
At the Smallville 200th Episode Red Carpet on Saturday night, KryptonSite was one of several media outlets who had the opportunity to talk with members of cast and crew for exclusive interviews.
Erica spoke with us about the new knowledge her character now has, teased some upcoming episodes, and talked about how prepared she is for the series' end next year.
This is the first of many interviews you will find here at KryptonSite between now and the airing of the show's 200th episode on Friday, October 15.
KryptonSite readers (as well as readers of IGN, Fancast, TV Guide, AOL TV, the Futon Critic, and more) will have some great Smallville treats in the coming weeks as we all came home with a wealth of interview material from the red carpet of tonight's Smallville 200th Episode Party. You'll see material on our respective sites, but here are some things to tide you over for now. Beware of spoilers below. (Please do not repost these on other sites; instead just link to KryptonSite. Thanks!)
- Lindsay Hartley's character will be the clawed "Mad Harriet." Her episode also will involves Granny Goodness and is said to feature a fight with Tess Mercer.
- Tom Welling's next episode directing is "Patriot" guest starring Alan Ritchson as A.C./Aquaman. "It is going to be a very big episode. It's going to deal with the big story arc of heroes, with Green Arrow and the Justice League. I really love directing the episodes that deal with big issues that are in Clark's life, and we're going to deal with a gigantic one in the episode," he reveals.
- Allison Mack will be back to work in November, possibly for Episode #13 of the new season. "I'll be back around November. I'm not sure where - I think it's around episode 13," she tells KryptonSite.
- Erica Durance burst into tears during what was supposed to be a very comedic scene when she got the news that Teri Hatcher would play her mother.
- Justin Hartley's Oliver will "come out" and reveal who he really is to the entire world.

Tonight: Smallville Returns!
Sadly, this is going to be the last time we'll be typing this... the new season of Smallville premieres TONIGHT at 8PM on The CW.
The season premiere is a big one, and if you're impatient you can even read our advance review.
Join the already-started Countdown/LIVE Thread on our forum and be sure to go there to talk about the show LIVE while it airs! For a forum that will surely be FULL of "Lazarus" discussion, visit here.
The tenth season of Smallville is almost here, and as part of a Vancouver press tour, a group of journalists including KryptonSite's Craig Byrne were able to talk with the fantastic Ms. Freeman about her role as Tess Mercer on the show. Inside, she talks about romance for Tess, Michael Rosenbaum, her character's allegiances, and more.
Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello has revealed that Teri Hatcher will be appearing in this season of Smallville.... as Lois Lane's mom! The episode will be the eighth episode of the season, "Abandoned," where Lois finds old videotapes of her mother. Teri's presence will be seen on these videotapes.
Former Lois Lane Phyllis Coates played Teri's mom in Lois & Clark years ago, and Teri's L&C co-star Dean Cain appeared on the show in Season 7.
Smallville vets John Schneider and Brian Austin Green will be visiting Teri soon on Desperate Housewives as well.

Lindsay Hartley To Appear On Smallville
Justin Hartley's wife, Lindsay, will be appearing in the eighth episode of Smallville Season 10. The episode is called "Abandoned."
Here's a statement from Executive Producer Kelly Souders on the casting:
"We are thrilled to have Lindsay on Smallville. We've all been looking for a fun opportunity for the last year. Her character is a woman who takes matters into her own hands. And those hands are wickedly dangerous! She won't be working with Justin but she'll have her hands full with Clark!"
Heading To Vancouver!
Talk about strange timing... updates to KryptonSite and other network sites might be a little less timely than usual this week, because the site's webmaster, Craig Byrne (that's me!), is headed to Vancouver!
While there, hopefully I'll be able to get some Smallville scoop as well as scoop for some shows you'll read about over on KSiteTV. There is a Smallville 200th episode party on Saturday, and while those of us in the press won't be able to go into that party (it's strictly cast & crew only), there WILL be a "red carpet" press line where actors and producers will hopefully be able to answer some of your burning questions. I'll be there, as will people from Fancast, Zap2It, TV Guide, and more, so that probably means you'll be reading a LOT of good Smallville content soon!
If there's anything you'd like to have answered, please leave your comments in the post at KSiteTV. Thanks!

Detail About Chloe Sullivan's Role In Action Comics Revealed
The character of Chloe Sullivan is finally coming to DC's Action Comics soon, and now the solicitation text for December's issue offers some hints as to what role she might have in the series.
September 10, 2001 was the day before a rather unfortunate day in American history. It also happened to be a month before Smallville premiered on October 16, 2001.
Throughout the final season we will be digging into the KryptonSite archives to find headlines from the show's past, for a look at what was going on in the early days of the show and the fandom. Today, we're happy to share with you two headlines from 9/10/01:
TV Guide Gives Smallville The "Thumbs
Up"
(9/10) TV Guide's Fall Preview for 2001 has arrived,
and their review glows like a hunk of Kryptonite. "The WB may have
lost Buffy, but it scores again in the fantasy and teen-angst
genres with this lovingly crafted, nostalgically evocative yet contemporary
update," they said.
Inside the latest copy of the printed version of TV Guide you'll
also find some great new photos of Tom Welling, Kristin Kreuk, and Michael Rosenbaum together.
Smallville In The Key Of XSmallville in the Key o
(9/10) The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the music for Smallvillewill be composed by the man who brought us many famous TV themes,
but is most famous for his work on Fox's The X-Files.
Mark
Snow is tapped to provide music for Smallville and most likely
its theme music as well.
"I'm
expecting to do a mix of orchestral and modern-contemporary rhythms. There's
going to be acoustic guitar and simple piano, an Americana folk element
-- that intimate sound contrasting with the big sound when necessary.
Plus, there are going to be a lot of songs geared to the WB's young audience.
I don't think it's going to be eclectic; I think it's going to be more
like Blink-182 and other contemporary bands. There are music supervisors
who are in charge of selecting that music," Snow said.
Since
most of his TV work has made it onto
a CD,
you might want to start saving up for your Smallville soundtrack
now :-)
Special
thanks as always to EmotionalHermit for the lead.

Interestingly enough, a Mark Snow Smallville soundtrack never did surface.

Thanks to OfficialThad and Andy B. for the tip.

It is still unknown if she will be playing Isis herself or a different character.

Two New Shows Join The KryptonSite Forum
As many of you already know, the KryptonSite Forums cover discussion for many shows beyond Smallville, and now two other series have joined the roster.
Hellcats (produced by Tom Welling!) is one of those two series. The new CW cheerleading drama premieres on September 8.
The other is another new superhero series which will be airing on ABC. No Ordinary Family might even evoke memories of the family-oriented tone Smallville had in its earlier years.
Check both of the new forums out and thanks as always for dropping by!
Two Casting Announcements For Episode #10.3 "Supergirl!"
KryptonSite has gotten confirmation of two actors appearing as DC Universe characters in the third episode of Smallville Season 10, which features the return of Laura Vandervoort and is called "Supergirl."
TV Guide has revealed that two members of the Lane family are returning in a Smallville Season 10 episode scheduled to air in late October.
We're not sure which episode it will be, but TV Guide's Natalie Abrams has posted in her original exclusive that both Michael Ironside (General Lane) and Peyton List (Lucy Lane) will be returning. Both characters last appeared in Season 4.
(While Ironside's in Vancouver, maybe he can drop by V? I know, wishful thinking...)
Every summer, KryptonSite hosts the annual KryptonSite Awards honoring the best and worst of any given season of the series.
Now, the results are in... did your favorite episode win? Did your least favorite character get shamed? Who got Best Couple this year? And how about that Best Cliffhanger, anyway?
The test footage of a live-action Blue Beetle, which has been hinted at by Geoff Johns for weeks now, is now online.
It might be of specific interest to fans of Smallville because, beyond the DC Comics connection, the Beetle is scheduled to make an appearance on the show alongside Booster Gold this season, in an episode written by Johns.
KryptonSite Smallville Comic-Con Interviews, Part VI: Cassidy Freeman!
First appearing in Season Eight of Smallville, Cassidy Freeman plays the morally ambiguous Tess Mercer, who first appeared to be a minion of Lex and later came to be an associate of Checkmate, ally of Zod, and worshipper of the "Traveler," all in just two seasons.
Cassidy participated in roundtable press discussion after the Smallville panel at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, and KryptonSite was one of the outlets who were able to speak with her. Sadly, it's the last of our Comic-Con Smallville interviews, but hopefully you'll think it's a good one!
KryptonSite Smallville Comic-Con Interviews: Executive Producers Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson!

In the Smallville promo reel from Season 10 shown at Comic-Con, Kara and Jonathan weren't the only returning faces that we saw... there was someone else. Who was it? While more transcribing interviews are going on, here's a quick snippet from Executive Producer Kelly Souders...
More Smallville Comic-Con Interviews Are Coming...
The very long Sunday, coupled with trying to work out some issues with the audio on the Erica Durance interview, have finally caught up with me.
I'll get back to transcription-land as soon as I wake up so there should be more Smallville interviews (as well as stuff from other shows!) later on Monday. Sorry again for the delay. I thought I'd get more in, but if I posted more now, with my luck it'd be riddled with errors.
KryptonSite Smallville Comic-Con Interviews, Part I: Tom Welling!
In nearly ten years of writing about Smallville, between companion books and running KryptonSite, I (webmaster Craig Byrne) have interviewed almost every cast member of the series - except one.
Today, after a fantastic panel at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, I've finally been able to check that off the list, talking to someone who was incredibly gracious both on the panel and in the press room - someone where the show wouldn't be possible without him - Mr. Tom Welling. The interview was short, but, hopefully you'll be pleased with what he had to say.
Today in the Comic-Con press room, KryptonSite has learned that Cat Grant in the episode "Shield" will be played by Keri Lynn Pratt.

Smallville: The Complete Ninth Season DVD: Episodes With Deleted Scenes!
Smallville: The Complete Ninth Season hits DVD on September 7, and thanks to A., here's a list of the episodes with deleted scenes.
For the past few months, in addition to covering Smallville and several other shows on their own individual sites like this one, we have started a general TV news blog - KSiteTV - covering all kinds of shows.
Now the site has had a redesign and a relaunch, and if you like KryptonSite, hopefully you'll like the new site as well!
Allison Mack has joined the cast of Nora and Delia Ephron's off-Broadway Love, Loss, and What I Wore at the Westside Theatre in Manhattan starting July 28. The performances for this limited run will continue through August 29, and also features Victoria Clark, Adriane Lenox, Jayne Houdyshell, Kate Mulgrew, and Kristine Nielsen.
Hopefully this month-long gap doesn't mean that Allison will miss Smallville's 200th episode, which should be shooting around that time. Thus far Allison's Season 10 contract as Chloe and the amount of Season 10 episodes she will be appearing in have not been confirmed. It is also possible that the number of performances per week won't affect her time for Smallville, but again, there is no way to know unless official word comes from show representatives.
Fans of Allison, however, should take a chance to see Allison performing on stage - if you go, let us know how it turns out!

Smallville: The Complete Ninth Season hits DVD on September 7, and we now have a list of the available extras. Some of these had been revealed on KryptonSite already.
- Kneel Before Zod Featurette - Since the Silver Age, the House of El has been plagued by the disreputable deeds of the Kryptonian villain, Zod. Now Smallville brings this infamous foe face-to-face with earth’s greatest hero, Clark Kent. Over the course of the season, Smallville promises to show us the rise of Zod’s venomous side, key betrayals with our beloved characters, and his rising from Major to General Zod. In this docu-featurette, we’ll create an in-depth look at this dynamic criminal from Krypton, his origins in DC’s Silver Age, and his various appearances in more recent film, animation, and live-action television.
- Justice for All Featurette - In the early 1940s, DC Comics formed the first team of superheroes in comic book history, with the Justice Society of America (JSA), pushing some of DC’s lesser known heroes to the forefront; Dr. Fate, Hawkman, Starman and Stargirl to name a few. Season nine of Smallville will see these characters in the “fantastical flesh” for the first time. In this script-to-screen featurette, we’ll meet with Smallville Creatives as they bring one of comic books’ iconic team of superheroes to television for the first time.
- Cast/Creator Commentaries on episodes Idol and Kandor
- Unaired Scenes
Don't forget you can already pre-order it and support this site:
Thanks to Andreas, we have artwork for what looks to be a complete set of Seasons 1-9 on DVD.
It includes a new image of Tom Welling, which can be seen flatter and much larger here.
UPDATE: We have learned from our friend Gord at TVShowsOnDVD.com that this box set is for Europe only, and will not be released in North America at this time.
Stay tuned for more information about it if and when it becomes available.

Episode #200 Will Be The Fourth Episode Of Season 10
Smallville writer-producer Al Septien has confirmed on Twitter that the 200th episode of the series will be the fourth episode of Season Ten, considering the fact that "Absolute Justice" is indeed counted as two episodes to the final tally.
It is likely that Episode #200 will be airing in October.
Tom Welling & Smallville Nominated For Teen Choice Awards
Tom Welling and Smallville itself have been nominated again in this year's Teen Choice Awards.
The Blue Beetle: DC Comics' Next Live-Action TV Hero?
As enjoyable as it has been to have Human Target (even though FOX needs to be shot for putting it on at the same time as Smallville next year)... it would still be infinitely more satisfying to see another super-powered DC Comics hero or franchise on the television screen.
And now, a few weeks after dropping some hints about the character Deadman, now DC Entertainment's Geoff Johns (aka "The Guy Who Wrote Absolute Justice") is suggesting the notion of a TV series based on the character, the Blue Beetle...
Smallville is one of the shows listed by media outlets as having a presence at the Comic-Con International in San Diego next month. This is not confirmed by the network or the studio; however, it IS very likely considering the fantastic reception the show has had at Comic-Con in the past.
Unfortunately, tickets for the event are sold out BUT you can expect updates here on KryptonSite and on the KryptonSite Network Twitter feed.

So check out the page, pledge and donate, and anything you can do to get the Smallville team closer to their goal would be appreciated, and it would help some people in need.

Even More Good News: Greg Beeman Returns To Direct The Smallville Season Finale!
More good news to go with the Season 10 renewal news of earlier today...
KryptonSite has learned exclusively that Greg Beeman, the man responsible for developing the "look" of Smallville as well as directing many of the series' best episodes, will be returning to direct the show's ninth season finale.
Beeman departed Smallville after Season 5 and later worked on the Aquaman pilot before spending three years as one of the main directors of Heroes. Most recently he worked on Melrose Place.
The CW Network has announced that its hit series “Smallville” will return in the fall of 2010 for a momentous tenth season.
“Smallville,” a modern retelling of the Superman legend, stars Tom Welling as Clark Kent. The series moved to Friday nights this season, where it currently ranks as network television’s #1 show in its time period among men 18-34 and men 18-49. Additionally, “Smallville” has dramatically improved The CW’s ratings performance in its Friday 8:00-9:00p.m.time period by 67% among adults 18-34 (1.5/6), 200% in men 18-34 (1.8/7), 75% in adults 18-49 (1.4/5), 183% in men 18-49 (1.7/6) and 74% in total viewers (3.12million).
“Smallville” joins the five previously announced series – “The Vampire Diaries,” “Gossip Girl,” “90210,” “Supernatural” and “America’s Next Top Model” – which will all return for another season on The CW.
“Smallville” was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (“Shanghai Noon,” “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”), based on the DC Comics characters. Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson serve as executive producers, along with James Marshall, Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola. The series is produced by Tollin/Robbins Productions, Millar/Gough Ink and Warner Bros. Television. SUPERMAN was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
TV Guide is reporting that Tom Welling, Justin Hartley, Cassidy Freeman, and Erica Durance will all be returning. No official word yet on Allison Mack or Callum Blue.
Al Septien & Turi Meyer To Write The Finale
Al Septien & Turi Meyer, writers of last week's "Conspiracy" episode, will be writing the season finale of Smallville, as revealed by Turi Meyer on his Twitter page.
A New Column: "Why Smallville Season 10 Needs Michael Rosenbaum"
On the KSiteTV Blog, KryptonSite's webmaster Craig Byrne lays out why the return of the show's best villain is exactly what a tenth season of Smallville needs...
IGN has learned that Lord will be played by Gil Bellows (Ally McBeal). The article also points out that the role could be recurring, which might be a good sign for Season Ten.

Geoff Johns Named Creative Director Of DC Comics
DC Comics is reorganizing, and part of those changes includes the installation of a new Creative Director who should be very familiar to Smallville fans - Geoff Johns.
Johns had this to say about his appointment at the DCU Source blog:
There is no place on Earth that has a more diverse and deep universe of characters and worlds. From Atrocitus to Y: The Last Man. My love for DC started when I first saw the Flash take on Captain Cold in the Challenge of the Super-Friends. I never ate my Honeycomb that fast. It when I bought my first comic books in 1985, including Crisis on Infinite Earths, alongside my Super Powers figures and only grew over the years until I broke into the industry myself.
So what does a “Chief Creative Officer” do? Well, I still wear t-shirts and write and go to conventions, but I’ll be doing a whole lot more too.
Under the leadership of Jim and Dan, I’ll continue writing and giving my creative input as I have been in comic books. But expanding onto that, Diane’s asked me to take our comic book world, embrace it (as I do) and use it to lead the creative charge on bringing it all to film, toys, television, video games, animation and beyond. The Justice Society appearing on Smallville was only the beginning.
John Schneider Stars In Spike TV "Back Nine" Pilot
Smallville patriarch John Schneider, who played "Jonathan Kent" in the show's first 100 episodes, has been cast to star in a SpikeTV pilot called "Back Nine."
Schneider will play the lead character, a washed-up former U.S. Open golf champion. He has a sex-addicted caddy named Tiger who was so named before the Tiger Woods drama last year; it'll be curious to see if the name changes.
If picked up as a series, Back Nine would join other sports-themed SpikeTV series including Blue Mountain State which features Sam Jones III (Pete Ross) and Alan Ritchson (Aquaman) in its cast.

Smallville Vets Take On Supergirl #50
Issue #50 of DC's Supergirl comic book features a story co-written by frequent Smallville tie-in author Jake Black alongside Helen Slater, who played Clark's Kryptonian mother "Lara" in two episodes of Smallville Season Seven.
Jake Black took a moment to talk to KryptonSite about the extra-sized issue which hits comic book stores on Wednesday.
The CW has renewed several shows including The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Gossip Girl, and 90210 for additional seasons but thus far has NOT announced a Season 10 renewal for Smallville.
The futures of One Tree Hill and Life Unexpected are also still unknown.
This might not be cause to be alarmed - after all, the network needs to see their new pilots before making key decisions - but it's clearly not a "sure thing" as the show has been in the past at this time of the year.

KryptonSite Scoop: Major Comics Figure Appearing In "Charade"
A major character from the DC Comic universe of characters will be making his first live-action appearance in the 19th episode of Smallville's current season, and KryptonSite is first with the scoop on who it will be.
Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily has posted the bombshell that a new Superman movie might still be a possibility, with The Dark Knight's Christopher Nolan in a supervisory role.
The project is still "in the early stages of development," but if it happens, it will likely be put through the process before some of the Superman rights revert to Jerry Siegel's heirs.
Chances are good that Nolan and the other filmmakers will take a new approach rather than using previous Superman actors such as Brandon Routh or Tom Welling in the role.
Smallville had a bit of an uptick over previous weeks with the two-hour special and interestingly, the show did even better in the 9PM hour.
Still surprising that repeats of House and Law & Order did better, though.
The CW is happy with the ratings. Here's what they had to say:
A 2-hr SMALLVILLE provided The CW with our best Friday night since Sept 2008 in all key categories, including adults 18-49 (1.2/4), men 18-49 (1.5/5), adults 18-34 (1.1/4), men 18-34 (1.3/5) and total viewers (2.8mil).
In terms of Smallville episodes, this is the highest rated Smallville of the season in total viewers, adults 18-49 (tie) and men 18-49.
Competitively, Smallville ranked #1 from 8-10pm in men 18-49.”
Here is the overnight-ratings breakdown for each hour. (Source: TVByTheNumbers)
Friday is almost here, which means we're getting very close to the airing of the CW's two-hour Smallville event, "Absolute Justice," which airs on Friday.
Absolute Justice is written by comic book favorite Geoff Johns, whose episode "Legion" also topped votes for Favorite Episode in last year's KryptonSite Awards. The two-hour story brings in some legendary heroes from comics' past.
Mr. Johns has taken the time to participate in an interview with KryptonSite where he talks about the episode and even offers some hints as to what his next project might be.
"TV MoJoe" (Josef Adalian) is reporting that the TV series based on the novel Cheer will be ordered as a presentation pilot to shoot soon for The CW. Variety is now referring to the project as Hellcats, and it is noteworthy to Smallville fans as it is produced by Tom Welling.
Tom's not the only superhero with his own show in the works - The CW has also picked up another presentation pilot, HMS, produced by Heroes' Hayden Panettiere.
Finally, there's Betwixt, a series based on a novel where "changelings in an urban setting are responsible for saving humans from evil." A full pilot will be shot for that one.
These projects follow the already-announced La Femme Nikita update and Amy Sherman-Palladino's The Wyoming Project.
Once all pilots are done and all deals are made, The CW will announce their full Fall schedules in May.

Screen Captures From A New Absolute Justice Promo Trailer!
The CW's two-hour Smallville event, "Absolute Justice," is just a few days away, and thanks to Mr. Video, we now have screen captures from the latest promotional trailer!
Smallville's "Disciple"Beats Dollhouse Series Finale In Overnight Ratings
Smallville overnight ratings were slightly higher than where things left off with "Pandora," which is good especially considering the two-month break. Hopefully, though, the folks who tuned in didn't only tune in thinking they were getting "Absolute Justice." (That one airs next week).
The show did better than FOX's Dollhouse finale which even had the advantage of advertising during American Idol. Oops.
Here is the overnight-ratings breakdown. (Source: TVByTheNumbers)
TVGuide.com has posted the exclusive scoop that the Silver Banshee will be appearing in the 16th episode of Smallville's current season. The title of the episode is "Escape."
Big News: Michael McKean (Perry White) Is Returning To Smallville, Too!
We didn't think the news would be very far off: Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is now also reporting that Annette O'Toole's husband, Michael McKean, is ALSO returning to Smallville later this season, playing the role of someday-editor of the Daily Planet, Perry White.
Perry has not been seen on Smallville since Season 3.
"We finally get to see the legendary introduction between Perry White and the intrepid Lois Lane," executive producer Brian Peterson teases. I know speaking for myself, I'm more concerned with seeing what Perry thinks of Clark's progress.
Ausiello has also gotten confirmation on when both Martha Kent and Perry White will be returning - it will be the next to last episode of the season, episode #9.21, for which we do not yet have an episode title.

Annette O'Toole Is Returning To Smallville!
Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting that Annette O'Toole has inked a deal to return to Smallville as Martha Kent in one of this season's final episodes.
No word yet on when, but Ausiello says it will be "rocked by an 'unexpected surprise' or two."
If this ends up happening for sure, this is one of the nicest Smallville spoilers since Absolute Justice was announced.

"Absolute Justice" Official CW Description!
The CW has released their official spoilery description for the Feb. 5 Smallville two-hour event "Absolute Justice" - and there are definitely some new, big spoilers within!
Earlier this week during the Vampire Diaries marathon, The CW aired another new promotional trailer with clips from upcoming episodes of Smallville.
We posted screen captures from the preview earlier this week (featuring lip-locking, Zatanna, the Dark Archer, the Justice Society, and even some evidence of Justice Society members Jay Garrick and Hawkgirl), but they were kind of small. Thanks to Mr. Video, we have now posted them larger with more clarity!
Tonight during the Vampire Diaries marathon, The CW aired yet another new promotional trailer with clips from upcoming episodes of Smallville.
The screen captures we have posted so far are rather small, but within you'll find some lip-locking, Zatanna, the Dark Archer, the Justice Society, and even some evidence of Justice Society members Jay Garrick and Hawkgirl! (Yes, Jay Garrick and Hawkgirl!)
Glen Winter has been nominated yet again for a cinematography award for his work on Smallville. Winter's work on "Savior" was nominated in the episodic/pilot TV category for the 24th annual American Society of Cinematographers Outstanding Achievement Awards.
Also nominated were Eagle Egilsson for Dark Blue, Jeffrey Jur for FlashForward, Michael Price for Ugly Betty, and Christian Sebaldt for CSI.
Winter previously won the award in 2008. Congratulations to Mr. Winter, and thanks to "Triplet" for the tip!

New Promo Screencaps - Featuring "Disciple," The Justice Society, Green Lantern?!? and More!
A few weeks back The CW aired a new promotional trailer showing off clips from Smallville once the show returns in early 2010. Most spectacularly, this clip includes some fleeting glimpses of a few members of the Justice Society from the upcoming Absolute Justice 2-hour movie event... including, it seems, the ring of Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern!
A New Costume For Green Arrow In The Comics... Does This Look Familiar?
The official DC Comics blog posted an image from an upcoming comic book featuring the Green Arrow. It appears Oliver's comics counterpart has taken on a familiar new look...
A Twitter feed about Vancouver productions is saying that Smallville has bought more buildings for sound stages. But why would they do that, especially if this could be the final season?
Erica Durance's Beyond Sherwood Forest Premieres This Weekend
A new Syfy Channel original movie starring Erica Durance (Lois) as well as Julian Sands (Jor-El) has now premiered.
In this production, Beyond Sherwood Forest, Erica plays Maid Marian, showing that her costume in "Wither" was a bit prophetic.
Unfortunately, we didn't have advance notice posted here (I'd have posted about it if I had gotten a heads-up of some sort), but fortunately, it's a Syfy Channel production so it'll re-air a few dozen times throughout the week. Check your local listings or Syfy.com to be sure.
Smallville was down a bit from last week in overnight ratings... dare we blame it on sparkling vampires and shirtless werewolves? Maybe. Let's just hope the show's return on January 22 moves things back up. But hey - Smallville's 2.45 million is still almost a million better than The CW's much-hyped return of Heather Locklear on Melrose Place.
Here is the overnight-ratings breakdown. (Source: Mediaweek).
Andy has pointed us toward an IMDB listing for another DC Comics-originated character who will be appearing in the upcoming "Absolute Justice" movie event, and even has the name of the actress who is fated to play her!
The press conference in the November 13 episode of Smallville may have looked a certain way on air, but originally, the sequence was much longer, and we have the images to prove it...
Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello has revealed that The CW has decided to air the upcoming Justice Society 2-parter as a two hour movie special on Friday, January 29, 2010.
Sadly, that's still a Friday, but the "movie" aspect of it all should get the show some huge promotion.
Ausiello also promises another, bigger scoop later today so stay tuned....
Laura Vandervoort Talks About V & A Smallville Return
Laura Vandervoort (Smallville's Kara) returns to television on Tuesday night with the series premiere of V on ABC.
In the series, Laura plays "Lisa," a character who, like Kara, may look like an average girl but is actually an alien. However, Lisa and Kara are entirely different beneath the surface...
Within the interview Laura also talks about the possibilities of returning to Smallville.
(Before anyone gets mad about "spoilers on the main page," keep in mind that site policy allows for things that are being discussed and publicized in mainstream media to be talked about here. So please don't be mad!)
A new interview at the Huffington Post of all places talks to Michael Shanks about his upcoming 2-episode role as Hawkman in the episode "Society." The article notes that the episodes will air on January 21 and January 28, though those dates have not yet been confirmed by the studio.
Here's a quote from the very revealing interview: "Hawkman being the alpha in the Justice Society, being someone who...has made some missteps along the way, can or could represent a type of mentor character to Clark in his leadership abilities with his burgeoning team members of the Justice League. He represents a character that has a lot of wisdom to pass down to this next generation, so there is a strong possibility that once the initial phase wears off that there will be a coming together of those two to paint a larger portrait of the future, of what Clark has available to him and what his options are."
You can read more of the interview, conducted by Jenna Busch, here.
The CW has put together a new image to market Smallville, and, well... at least the right person's head is on the right person's body. Still, no offense to the person who did this originally, but a lot of the fan artists in Smallville fandom could probably come up with something better and more realistic looking.
DC Comics villainess Roulette makes her Smallville debut on Friday night's episode, and the actress who played her, Steph Song, took the time to speak with KryptonSite in an interview.
In the interview, she talks about researching the character, fight scenes, possibility of returning to the series, and more.
TMZ.com is reporting that Sam Jones III, who played "Pete Ross" in the first three seasons of Smallville, was arrested as "part of a conspiracy to deal more than 10,000 pills of oxycodone."
The DEA reports that Sam was the "Hollywood connection" in the plot to distribute the pills. If convicted, Sam could face up to 20 years in federal prison.
Let's hope this is mistaken, and that Sam was not involved. Stay tuned for more information when and if it becomes available.
UPDATE: KTLA has posted an article with more information about the situation. You can find that here.
KryptonSite has learned that Steve Bacic has landed the role of Oliver's mentor "The Dark Archer" in the upcoming episode "Disciple."
The name and the face may be familiar to Smallville fans as Bacic played one of the victims of Jeremy Creek in the very first episode of Smallville back in 2001. Fans of the sci-fi genre may recognize him from recurring roles in Andromeda and Stargate. He also played a not-so-Beastly Dr. Henry McCoy in X2. Soon he'll be appearing as "Dr. Sexy" in an episode of Supernatural.
Tom Welling Teams With Desperate Housewives' Kevin Murphy For New Production
The first project from Tom Welling's production company has apparently now been revealed with an alum from Desperate Housewives also producing.
Tom Welling Productions will be teaming with Kevin Murphy for a CW adaptation of the book Cheer: Inside The Secret World Of College Cheerleaders. The book is a "real-life account of the world of college cheerleaders." Murphy and Welling as well as A.J. Marcantonio will be producers.
DC Comics' Superman: Secret Origin: Geoff Johns Creates The "Ultimate" Smallville Comic
Hitting comic book stores this week in the first issue of a new comic book mini-series titled Superman: Secret Origin. The book is written by Geoff Johns (writer of Smallville's "Legion") and has some special treats for Smallville fans within.
The first issue takes place during Clark's childhood, and folks like Lana and Pete are present. [SOME SPOILERS MAY FOLLOW] The added thrill is that there are some references to the TV show that didn't usually exist in comic book continuity - for example, the reaction that sets off Clark's heat vision. There's also a reference to a "Chloe S." for those who look closely enough, and I still think Jonathan Kent looks like John Schneider in a few places. You'll also notice that the barn and the farm house look a little familiar, and Clark takes on a blue shirt/red jacket combo that will "blur" the line between TV and comics continuity.
Either way, it's a fantastic comic, and it almost makes me wish there was a monthly comic book series like this which explored Clark's younger days and retold Smallville from the comic book universe's perspective - involving Lana, Chloe, Pete, Lex and the rest. Check it out in good comic book shops everywhere.

A New Column! "Ten Comics I'd Like To See As TV Series, Part 2"
Who says the movie studios should be the only ones giving us comic-book fun?
In part 2 of a 2-part series, KryptonSite's Craig Byrne takes a look at some comic books he's love to see on TV... this time from the Marvel Comics stable of characters.
The Justice Society is coming to Smallville and KryptonSite's Craig Byrne weighs in on who and what he'd like to see in this highly-anticipated episode.
The episode of Smallville featuring the legendary Justice Society won't be airing for several months, but we did get a quote from writer Geoff Johns about what we might be able to look forward to.
Dawn Ostroff Says Smallville Could Live Past Season 9
The CW's Entertainment President Dawn Ostroff today spoke with the media at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in Pasadena, California, and offered a shiny broadcast for the show's future.
"I hope it's not the last season," she said. "I think the producers have done a great job coming up with really good storylines this year, but I do think the show still has a lot of life left to it."
Regarding the show's Friday-night move, she says "this is the first year we're actually migrating all of our viewers to Friday night. We felt the best way to open up Friday night was with a big established hit like Smallville."
Ostroff does not know if Michael Rosenbaum will be returning to the show this year. "I wouldn't rule it out, but I don't know if it will happen this season," she said. "I don't know if we really actually had a conversation with Michael, but I think the idea was to keep the character alive and make his presence really felt." (Clearly she hasn't seen "Requiem.")

The 2009 KryptonSite Awards: The Results Are In!
After two months of voting it's time to announce the winners of this year's KryptonSite Awards - an annual tradition here at the site honoring the best and worst of any given season of the show.
Thousands of people voted in each category. Curious about the winners?
A New Column! "Ten Things I'd Like To See In Season 9"
As the first spoilers foir Season 9 begin to trickle out, KryptonSite's webmaster Craig Byrne lists the ten things he'd like to see in Smallville's ninth season.
Repost: A Reminder To PLEASE Check Out Smallville Season 7: The Official Companion!
In addition to working on KryptonSite, site webmaster Craig Byrne has written the four most recent Smallville companion books for Titan
Publishing.
The Season 7 companion book, which featured a Foreword by Laura Vandervoort (Kara), was released in October.
Unfortunately, a decision to make a Season 8 book has not yet been made, and chances are if sales on the previous books do not pick up, we might not get companions for Season 8 (or beyond)
Personally speaking, and breaking from the editorial voice for a moment, I'd really like the opportunity to do another book and I KNOW there are a lot of unanswered questions about Season 8 that fans would like to see answers to. If sales go up, and the Amazon.com ranking goes up, they might have no choice but to go forward with more!

KryptonSite was the first website created to focus exclusively on The WB's Smallville back in 2001. In the eight-plus years since, it has been the premier location for the latest news, images, and spoilers regarding the show.
KryptonSite webmaster Craig Byrne has written five books about the series, and the site's success has spawned many spin-off sites for series such as Heroes and V.
